The art awards scheme for offenders, secure patients and detainees

We’re the UK’s best-known prison arts charity. We’ve been awarding, exhibiting and selling artworks by offenders, detainees and secure patients for over 55 years.

Our awards receive over 8,000 entries a year – inspiring offenders to take part in the arts, work for achievement and transform their lives. Our national exhibition attracts 20,000 visitors – showing the public the talent and potential of offenders and people in secure settings.

We have no endowment or capital – our work depends entirely on donations.

STORY TIME explores the creative ways in which stories can be told through visual means. Each piece on display has been selected from the 2017 Koestler Awards and has been made by an entrant aged under 18.

The exhibition has been curated by the Koestler Trust in collaboration with Victim Support, at the invitation of the UK Supreme Court Arts Trust. Each piece on display has been selected from the 2017 Koestler Awards – an annual award scheme run by the Koestler Trust that receives over 7,000 entries each year across 51 artforms spanning art, writing and music.

As part of its collaboration with Victim Support, the Koestler Trust invited people who had been affected by crime to respond to some of the artworks. Their responses are displayed on the captions within the exhibition. Victim Support is an independent charity which helps people affected by crime and traumatic events in England and Wales providing individual, independent, emotional and practical help to enable people to cope and recover from effects of crime.
