We are absolutely delighted to be holding our first ever exhibition especially for Scotland. It has been made possible by the vision and generosity of The Co-operative. Our partnership with The Co-operative runs for the next 2 years, and also includes exhibitions in the North West of England.
The Edinburgh show consists of visual entries for this year's Koestler Awards from prisons and other establishments across Scotland. It also includes extracts of creative writing.
The Co-operative's support has enabled us to offer additional awards to Scottish entries, with special judges from Scotland including:-
- for poetry, Douglas Dunn, poet and former professor at St Andrew's University;
- for fiction, James Crosbie, writer and former Koestler Award winner;
- for visual arts, Kate Gray Director of the Collective Gallery; Robin Baillie, Senior Outreach Officer at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery; Kirsten Sams, Offender Learning, Skills and Employability Services Manager at Motherwell College; and Robin Stewart, Chair of The Scottish Board for The Co-operative
Visitors to the exhibition are also invited to vote for a favourite exhibit. Visitors' written comments will be forwarded to the artists (anonymously), and the winning three will receive special prizes.
The venue is the spacious cafe of Edinburgh's main arthouse cinema, across the street from Usher Hall. It is an excellent place for lunch or an evening drink.
The exhibition is being officially opened by Baroness Linklater of Butterstone, Kenny McAskill, Scottish Cabinet Minister for Justice and Robin Stewart, Chair of The Co-operative's Scottish Board.
We are holding a seminar at the exhibition for arts professionals who work with offenders and in secure settings in Scotland. For more details, please contact our Touring Exhibitions Co-ordinator Fiona Curran.
