MENTORING

“I have received feedback from the general public [visitor voting cards] and it was very emotional; such kind words borne from a true understanding of what I was trying to convey in my pictures. I had watery eyes reading what people had to say about my work. You and the Trust are doing more than just good work for us inmates – you have certainly done something major with me. Inmates such as I who have done a long time in jail tend to think that the public have nothing but hatred for us and that we are unredeemable. I am humbled by the things that everyone from school kids to doctors have stated about my work.”

SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

In order to recognise and reward particularly talented artists who are not due for imminent release and therefore do not fit the criteria of Koestler's current Mentoring Project; we have developed a series of Koestler Scholarship Awards.

Who is eligible for an Arts Scholarship Award?

Application to the Scholarship Award scheme is by invitation only.
The Koestler Trust will actively approach award winners whose arts practice demonstrates real artistic sense, technical skill and choice of subject matter. These artists often will have drawn particular praise from our awards judges, sometimes year after year.

How it will work

After selecting the recipient of the Scholarship Award, the Koestler Trust will present the individual with a special certificate, £150 in prize money and £150 of art materials for the establishment they reside at.

They will then be tutored over 10 intensive mentoring sessions with a professional artist, working towards developing and displaying a professional standard portfolio of artwork.

Mentoring sessions are provided in supplement to any art classes the recipient may already attend.

Our scholars work will almost certainly be showcased at our national exhibition, if not also at one of our regional tours, if they originate from those areas. Scholarship students will have plaques placed by their work, highlighting their special awards.

The Koestler Trust will promote the Scholarship Award within establishments by highlighting work by individual Scholars in our publications, including our annual report, arts posters, and prospective newsletter, all of which are sent to prisons. This will raise the internal profile of the award and increase the numbers of entrants on longer term sentences who could consider applying for mentoring.

Case studies of the individual scholars will help develop and mould how the scholarship training programme, adapting it to the particular security and time limitations of holding the sessions within the establishment Scholarship students will have summary portfolios and case studies drawn up with them at the culmination of their mentoring.

HOW TO SUPPORT A SCHOLARSHIP AWARD

The Scholarship Awards are aimed at the small number of Koestler entrants whose talent shines out amongst the thousands of other talented artists they stand up against each year. We want to support these artists to ensure that their talents continue to develop and to help them reach their full potential.

With your help we can secure the artistic future of many more of our Koestler Award Winners. By offering to support an Award the money raised will go to fund things like training for our mentors and artists materials. Find out more about Naming an Award
